EMERGENCY MEETING OF COUNCIL

The meeting was called to order by the Warden at 11:00 p.m. in the Conference Room, in the Administrative Centre, in Barrington, N.S., with the following members present:

- Councillor Louise Halliday
- Councillor Dwayne Hunt
- Councillor Wayne Smith
- Brian Holland, Municipal Clerk
PURPOSE OF MEETING
Pursuant to Section 19 (3) of the Municipal Government Act, the Warden requested members to stay following the Finance and Administration Committee Meeting for an Emergency Meeting of Council, for the purpose of considering a fax letter received from the local representative of the UNSM. Deputy Mayor Sherry Lewis has called a meeting of the UNSM Regional Representatives for tomorrow evening at the Hebron Recreation Centre in Yarmouth. The purpose of this meeting is to discuss Public Health Care in the communities in the region; in particular, pending reductions in the Health Care Budget for the District Health Authorities.
DISCUSSION
The sentiment was expressed that health care is a high priority that is more important than balancing the provincial budget. Members generally believe that the District Health Authority and the Department of Health could be more fiscally responsible in their spending. Nevertheless, the members generally expressed the opinion that it was more important to provide adequate public health care than it is to balance the provincial budget.
Moved by E. Nickerson and seconded by L. Halliday that Barrington Municipal Council believes the Province should make the provision of adequate health care in the Province a higher priority than a balanced budget but this should not be done at the expense of Nova Scotia municipalities.
