Activity Advent – Day 1! Stretch it out!

We all tend to sit more in the winter, whether at our desks at work and in school or on the couch at the end of a long day. Yoga is a great way to stay active and flexible all year long but especially relaxing in a cozy warm room with relaxing Christmas lights and music.

Kids have a great selection of fun online resources: Cosmic Kids is one that they have probably discovered. Check out this Christmas adventure in Yoga! https://www.pinterest.ca/pin/1090574865992102967/

Yoga and stretching is also a great way to get some movement in during your work day since you do not need special clothes or a lot of space to do most activities. Check out our Pinterest page to get you started. https://www.pinterest.ca/barrington_recreation/workplace-wellness/

Activity Advent Day 2!

Does your family have moves or do you stick to the chicken dance? Either way, dance is a fun way to add activity to your day!

Check out some of these dance videos and instruction we have collected. If anyone wants to comment on our socials with a video, that would be worth 10 ballots and great respect!https://www.pinterest.ca/barrington_recreation/family-fun-games/

Activity Advent Day 3!

Check out a local event or happening! This time of year brings so many craft fairs, concerts, sport tournaments, community events, etc that it might be hard to get to everything you want to!

The Barrington Curling Club is hosting Stickfest this weekend while the Everest Curling Senior Championships are happening next door in Yarmouth starting on Sunday

.Barrington Municipal High School is hosting a Christmas Fair today from 11-2.

If you have not heard, Shelbure Events Committee has postponed the Miracle on Dock St. Celebrations to tomorrow, Dec. 4th.

Do some shopping at the Barrington Museum Complex for the neates finds and great gifts!  More local crafts and gifts will be at the Evelyn Richardson Memorial School Craft Fair. (Dec. 10)

Visit Barrington always has some exciting announcements and new events to share. On Monday, TSN will be showcasing the World's Double Bit Axe Throwing that was held in Barrington this August!

Even if you don’t get out to an event, try something new for the season at home. It might be a great new activity or holiday tradition!

Activity Advent Day 4!

Create a scavenger hunt for the kids or challenge them to come up with ideas. Creating the game develops decision making skills, logic, observation and creativity. Younger children can follow through images, while older children may enjoy puzzles that lead to clues.

A photo scavenger hunt is fun for the whole family and you can get some group shots for the family album while you’re at it!

We have some ideas and links on our Pinterest page or make your own!

 Activity Advent Day 5!

After a wait, it’s Dumping Day in LFA 34! It is a rare thing to have this day on a December advent calendar so let’s shellibrate!

Get crafts and create something “lobstery”. We have a few ideas on our Pinterest page and you can always take a stroll on the Sherose Island Rocks Trail to see some lobster painted rocks. If you have the supplies, paint one and leave it for someone to find!

We wish everyone a safe and prosperous season!

Activity Advent Day 6!

Spending time together in the kitchen can be recreation time! It is a chance to catch up after a busy day away from the screens, everyone learns skills and enjoyment of creating healthy food, and it can be a lot of fun when everyone gets creative.

What’s your family favourite?

If you're willing to give it up, we would love to see some recipes on our social media pages!

Activity Advent Day 7!

Make Snow!We haven’t seen much white stuff this year (now that we say that we will get a blizzard! Hah hah!)

Cut and clip your own snowflakes – check out some of our ideas on our Pinterest page or make your own design.

Decorate the house with your creations and make a Winter Wonderland!

 Activity Advent Day 8!

Build a fort in or out!

For this all you need to do is go find brush, branches for outdoors shelters. Tarps and even old blankets! Ropes & clothespin work well in or out. We have a few ideas on our Pinterest Board:

Allow kids to build on their own — without tearing apart the house, of course.

It’s exciting for parents to watch their kids playing and creating their own narratives. In today’s world, things are very structured and curated for kids but building and talking about forts brings adults back to some of the best times of their childhood.

Activity Advent Day 9!

Do you have holiday movie traditions? What is your family must-see?

Have you ever created your own movie by creating a script and acting out parts? What about using stop motion photography techniques with Lego, playdough, or action figures? Check out our Pinterest Page for a few ideas to get you started and make sure to share your video – that is definitely worth some draw entries!

 Activity Advent Day 10!

That’s it! If it won’t snow outside for us to play in, we will make our own!

This simple recipe uses only 3 ingredients and one of those is optional. You probably have everything you need in your cupboard.

Play Snow:

  • baking soda
  • water in a spray bottle
  • glitter (optional)

Pour 2 or more cups of baking soda into a bowl or other container. We bought inexpensive plastic containers with lids at the dollar store so we could easily make and store it. You may add glitter as well.

While mixing with your hands, spray water on the soda. You don’t need much at all. Your snow should still be loose but will pack when you mold it with your hands.

Create a winter scene with small toys and decorations. You might even go outside and collect some twigs, leaves and pinecones to add a real touch of nature.

Don’t forget to show us your winter scenes on Facebook or Instagram with your homemade snow and fingers crossed we will get some real stuff to play in soon!

 Activity Advent Day 11

Decorate with nature!

Get out and collect some items from nature and create some ornaments to decorate your home (inside and out!)

We have collected some ideas on our Pinterest page  or get creative and make your own design.

A favourite of ours is great for any age: We purchase inexpensive plastic or glass ornaments that you can fill with any finds in the outdoors. We created some from items found along the Sherose Island Rocks Trail but a beach one would also be very cool.

The best part is getting outside in nature! Being outdoors is good for your body, mind and soul. Take a moment just to look, listen and just breathe.

Activity Advent Day 12!

FREEZE!

Today we woke up with a “feel like” minus ten …so let’s play freeze!

Get outside and play freeze tag of you have a crew.

To play: When tagged by “IT” you must freeze in place until thawed (tagged) by another player. If all players are frozen, change who is it because they were victorious!

FREEZE Dance!

To play: Start the music and everyone dances. Have someone stop the music at unexpected intervals. Players must stay frozen exactly as they were when the music stops until it starts again. If they move, they get a point. The person with the least number of points after X rounds can go into a career as a statue model.

Don't forget to comment and share your freezing best on our Facebook or Instagram pages!

 Activity Advent Day 13!

Create a Christmas Card and make someone’s day!

There is something very special about receiving a card, especially hand made. We have collected some ideas on our Pinterest page to get you inspired.

Who will you send your card to? Teachers, coaches or even a stranger would cherish such a gift. Local seniors homes would be happy to accept a greeting and give it to someone who may be lonely this holiday.

Comment on our social media pages for your chance to win a family fun winter prize pack!

Activity Advent Day 14!

It’s mid week in the busiest time of year and everyone still seems to have some pent-up energy. Try some “Minute-to-Win-it” games to release it and have some hilarious fun!

One of our favourites is “Cookie Face” where you place a cookie on your forehead and try to get it in your mouth without your hands. Make sure to take pictures of some of the expressions!! We have found a bunch of other ideas and saved them to our Pinterest Page – you probably have much of the things needed in your home already!

Remember.. these actovities can be done in any order and you do not have to complete most or all of them even. Simply comment on the related social media post to win!

 Activity Advent Day 15

Build a gingerbread house, village, train, or sea dragon if that’s what you’re into!

There are different kits available this year using lots of different kinds of cookies and candies. What is your go-to?

Are you traditional and stick to gingerbread or have you tried Kit Kats, Oreos, Froot Loops? :D

Check out some amazing builds on our Pinterest page and make sure to share your creations!

 Activity Advent Day 16!

What is your favourite family board game? Do you try new games or stick to traditional favourites?

Besides the obvious social and cognitive benefits, did you know that playing board games reduces blood pressure (although you have not met MY family 😉) and reduces the risk of mental diseases such as dementia and Alzheimer’s?

For every activity you or a family member does, please comment on the FB or Instagram post. Each comment will have a ballot in the draw for a family winter fun prize pack valued at over $100!  Activity Advent Day 17!

Go for a hike (or walk)!

It may be raining but put on some good gear and head to the woods!

Get a start on the Barrington Hike Challenge ad earn the special badge! .

All time spent outdoors in nature reduces stress and anxiety, something we could all use at this busy time of year.

 Activity Advent Day 18!

 Go skating!

Lace up your skates and hit the rink (or pond eventually  - fingers crossed!)

Today, Dec. 18th,  Wilson’s Home Hardware is hosting a very special free Skate with Santa from 1:30-3pm at the Sandy Wickens Memorial Arena.

There are plans for themed fun public skates over the holidays and specials on  ice rentals. Check out the full schedule on our website!

 Activity Advent Day 19!

Take in your neighborhood’s holiday lights or venture out to some homes you know outdo themselves every year.

Play some festive tunes, get everyone a hot chocolate and drive or walk on tour.

Do you like the elegant candles in the windows, the fun characters dancing on the lawn, or the best light show?

Activity Advent Day 20!

Create some holiday Ice balls and decorate outside!

These are easy: Just fill a balloon with water and add several drops of food colouring. Freeze either outside (check the overnight temperatures) or in your freezer.

Use them to create ice sculptures or leave them around like jewels. Save them in your freezer for snow and make the most beautiful igloo!

Recipes and ideas are on our Pinterest page. Or leave your own creations in the comments. 😊

 Activity Advent Day 21!

Celebrate the Winter Solstice!

It’s the shortest day of the year so after today, we will finally see the sunset moving to later in the evening.

The winter solstice is celebrated in many ways and in varied cultures. Festivals, gatherings, and more are common. One way to celebrate is to bring more light to the evening through candles or having a bonfire.

How will you celebrate? Glow light games? A snowdance?

Activity Advent Day 22!

Pay it forward with an act of kindness!

It feels wonderful when someone makes your day. The best part is that it takes very little effort, anyone can do it and it can be for anyone: a friend, family member, co-worker, service provider, or complete stranger.

Be kind to everyone, especially retail workers, this time of year, and take the time to really make at least one person feel amazingly special today.
