Flyer Distribution Opt-Out

We have recently received a number of complaints and inquiries relating to the distribution of flyers in our Municipality. Particularly with flyers piling up on properties or becoming litter when it rains and snows.
We've determined that if a resident no longer wishes to receive flyers, they can contact The Chronicle Herald — the primary distributor of door-to-door flyers in our Municipality — at 902-426-3031 or 1-800-565-3339. The same number can be phoned if residents would like to confirm receipt of flyers.
If any issues are encountered in rejecting or confirming receipt of flyers, please contact the municipal office at 902-637-2015.

Concerns related to public safety, security, and economic uncertainty
CLARE, NOVA SCOTIA (Nov. 27, 2020) – The Mayors and Wardens of eleven municipal units in Southwest Nova Scotia are working together with a unified voice to raise public safety, security, and economic concerns of the municipal units and their residents related to the ongoing tensions surrounding the fishery in Saint Mary’s Bay.
The eleven municipal units—the Municipalities of the Districts of Argyle, Barrington, Clare, Digby, Shelburne, and Yarmouth, and the Towns of Clarks Harbour, Digby, Lockeport, Shelburne, and Yarmouth—have a shared interest in helping reach a peaceful resolution to the current situation in Southwest Nova Scotia.
“With the holders of an estimated 1,693 lobster licences setting their traps in LFAs 33 and 34 on November 30th to start their 2020-2021 commercial fishing season, community concerns around public safety and security are heightened,” said Eddie Nickerson, Warden, Municipality of Barrington. “We all want a peaceful start to the commercial fishing season and to resolve the tensions in Saint Mary’s Bay.”
It is expected that the federal government will continue to provide increased resources to address public safety and security concerns, including an increased presence by the Canadian Coast Guard, RCMP, and Department of Fisheries and Oceans Officers in the area and on the water for the opening of the commercial fishing season and the foreseeable future.
The municipal leaders also encourage the federal government to establish and enforce a fair regulatory regime for the commercial and moderate livelihood fisheries that ensures conservation of the lobster stock and preserves the existing inshore commercial fleet.
“The lobster fishery is vital to our region and our province, and there is a very real anxiety among our community members that this important economic driver is in jeopardy the longer there is uncertainty around the commercial and moderate livelihood fishery,” said Ronnie Leblanc, Warden, Municipality of Clare. “We all want a long-term sustainable fishery for all fishers and we are here to support and work with those involved to find a peaceful resolution.”
The Mayors and Wardens of the eleven municipal units have been meeting virtually with key stakeholders involved in working toward a positive resolution.
On Saturday, Nov. 21, 2020, the municipal leaders met with the Hon. Bernadette Jordan, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, and Member of Parliament for South Shore-St. Margaret’s to begin a constructive dialogue and discuss their concerns. On Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2020, they met with Allister Surette, the Federal Special Representative, to better understand his role and to express concerns surrounding the ongoing situation.
The Mayors and Wardens look forward to ongoing discussions with Min. Jordan, Mr. Surette, and other stakeholders.

More Internet Projects Announced in Barrington

Today, the Province of Nova Scotia and Develop Nova Scotia announced the second round of Internet for Nova Scotia Initiatives, including a project to connect approximately 850 more homes and businesses in the Municipality of Barrington to Bell Canada’s all-fibre network. This project is made possible through an investment of $243,925 by the Municipality of Barrington and will provide residents with download speeds of up to 1.5 Gigabits per second (Gbps).
“After the completion of this project, more than 90% of the Municipality will have access to high-speed Internet,” said Warden Eddie Nickerson. “Having a strong Internet network will help our Municipality be a place where businesses and residents can prosper. We will continue working with our partners to actively pursue further funding opportunities so even more residents can have access to this important service.”
Preparatory and engineering work will soon begin east of Barrington in the communities of Clyde River, Port Clyde and Goose Lake, along with several communities in the Port La Tour area including Baccaro, Blanche and Thomasville. More information around construction timing will be shared once this work has been completed.
The first round of Internet for Nova Scotia Initiative projects, where the Municipality invested $200,000, will see approximately 950 homes and businesses between Charlesville through to Doctor’s Cove get access to Bell’s all-fibre network by early next year.

Barrington Hits the Bullseye on hosting the 2021 World Double Bit Axe Throwing Championships
BARRINGTON, N.S. - The best axe throwers from around the world will gather in Barrington, N.S., for the 2021 World Double Bit Axe Throwing Championships.
The Nova Lumberjacks Society (NLS) is pleased to announce the 2021 World Double Bit Axe Throwing Championships has been awarded to the Municipality of Barrington. The NLS was extremely pleased with the Municipality’s overall bid to host the 2021 Championships, which will see more than 125 competitors from around the world participate in this 3-day event. The NLS who issued the bid is a Nova Scotia based, registered non-profit organization who were awarded the right to host the 2021 World championships, based on their experience and success in hosting previous events including the 2018 and 2019 Canadian Axe Throwing Championships in Liverpool, and for the last four years, the Nova Scotia Lumberjack Championships.
